The Beginnings of Cuna de Tierra

By Paola Velasco

The Cuna de Tierra Wine Project was rooted within a microclimate, in a high-altitude semi-desert. It’s based on passion and the fulfillment of its founders’ dream, a first in the wine region in the state of Guanajuato. The winery began in 2005 and has positioned itself as one of the best wines in Mexico. The beginnings of Cuna de Tierra are the dream of Ricardo Vega and Juan Manchón—a friendship and a passion for making wine.Juan’s father is one of the people who reintroduced grape vines to the region. They began by making three barrels of wine in 2005, and in 2009, they entered their wine without a name or label in a Mexican wine contest organized by a well-known magazine. They won fifth place. In 2010, after five years of experimentation and a lot of work, they started as a commercial brand called Cuna de Tierra. The brand has been a great success since then, and the efforts of more than 70 workers have led them to win more than 90 medals in the five best international competitions of the International Organization of Vine and Wine (OIV). In San Miguel de Allende you can find the wines in their own WineBar on street Correo 12, or you can visit the vineyards in Dolores Hidalgo on Carretera a Dolores Hidalgo-San Luis de la Paz, km 11, in Guanajuato State. www.cunadetierra.com
