Ted Davis on the Creative Road from Hollywood to San Miguel

By Signe Hammer

San Miguel PEN is excited to present Ted Davis — photographer, actor, owner of Ted Davis Galeria on Zacateros, and author of “Eternal San Miguel de Allende” — recounting his journey from Hollywood to San Miguel with creative storytelling being his driving force. Celebrated author Sandra Cisneros, who wrote the forward to his book, will introduce him. They will appear at the Posada de la Aldea, second floor, Ancha de San Antonio 15, at 6pm.

Davis’ goal has always been to tell a compelling story within a frame. “Whether stage proscenium arch, movie screen, TV screen, picture frame, or coffee table book, it all comes from the same place.” In addition to describing the exploration of his road from acting, directing, and script writing in Hollywood to owning a fine art photography gallery and writing and publishing a popular book in San Miguel de Allende, he will also explain what drives his creative processes in different media.

Born in Tobago, Trinidad, Davis began his photography career while studying theatre arts at the University of Texas, Austin. He went on to spend 20 years in Hollywood, working as a photographer (Perseus Publishing, Warner Brothers Television), a stand-up comedian, and a film and television actor with guest-starring roles in such TV shows and movies as “The West Wing,” “Seinfeld,” and “Doc Hollywood.” His photography has been shown in New York, Los Angeles, Mexico City, and elsewhere and has been published in such magazines as Architectural Digest and The New York Times as well as in his book. “My goal,” he says, “is to tell a story using composition, light, color, and timing — to capture a fleeting, powerful moment of life, beautifully and poetically.”

San Miguel PEN is especially proud of its efforts in assisting our endangered Mexican journalists and the families of the far too many who are murdered.
