There are Many Guadalupe Álvarez

By Jesús Aguado
One of the most complicated and secret weddings in the city was that of Prince Royce. It was also the strangest space in which to organize a wedding. Guadalupe Álvarez runs Penzi Weddings which is located on a hectare of land, in the middle of nowhere.

The Alvarez family has many “Guadalupes.” This most likely explains why we see the founder of Penzi not only showing a marriage enclosure to couples, or tasting the menu; but also being a volunteer in some civil society organization; or providing humanitarian aid.

Here, sometimes in a serious mode and sometimes not so seriously, Álvarez tells us about the company she founded, and how she makes her moves from here to there, and vice versa. “Helping is something that makes me very happy, it fills my heart, I come from a family that has always helped, if you have little it doesn’t matter, you can always share it. I hope I have taught these values to my children, and now grandchildren.”

Jesús Aguado: What relationship does the Guadalupe neighborhood have with you?
Guadalupe Álvarez: it was named in honor of my paternal grandmother, Guadalupe. My two grandparents are buried in the neighborhood church. In the station there is Calle Lupita that was named for her, there are many Guadalupe Álvarez in the family.

JA: How was your childhood in San Miguel de Allende?
GA: Happy, calm, cared for, fun. San Miguel was perfect for me. We all knew each other; We took care of each other, and if you were out of your house for something after 7pm, anyone would send you back, it was a super community.
JA: What is your best memory in the city?
GA: Growing up surrounded by family, we lived on Mesones. My grandmother was across the street next to the theater, and the church was next to my grandmother. That was my little world, going to the garden two blocks away was an “odyssey.” I remember perfectly the heavy rains of summer, going out to get wet under the canals, running through the streets, the smell of wetness, it is one of my favorite memories.
JA: If we could go back in time, what would you take away, what would you add to the city?
GA: Being a community, to care about those near you, your neighbor on the next block, going to school with the son of the bank owner or with the daughter of the bank maintenance lady, I liked that.
JA: Did you study to plan events?
GA: I studied communications, and when I lived in Mexico City I organized massive events. Of course I did not study for that, this career did not exist in the 80s, and taking some of what I learned, especially logistics, I started with planning. Now there is an event planning career and when I go to a conference I learn a lot from other planners.
JA: Is it born talent, or control?
GA: (laughing) I have always liked to organize a party, a trip, and so forth. I started without having much of an idea, only with the desire and need to have a local business, because mine was global and I was a bit tired of traveling so much, and I wanted to be with my teenage children more, in 2005 when I started.
JA: If we look back, what was your first paid event like?
GA: It was a meal for the Esmeraldas, and obviously they gave it to me as they knew me and helped me. I was so nervous that I left the keys in the car with all the dishes covered etc. But it went well.
JA: Would you do the same?
GA: Sure, because I was starting out, I didn’t have anyone to help me. I carried things, bought the Cokes, and decorated. I think that without starting from the bottom, making mistakes, I would not have learned, and above all, I would not have been criticized so much. This constructive criticism that I apply to myself all the time is what has helped me to be better. Errors teach, at least they have taught me a lot.
JA: What has been the most spectacular event you have organized?
GA: Phew, that’s complicated because we have had a lot, but thinking of complicated and because of the secrecy, it was Emeraude and Prince Royce’s wedding. They were very attractive singles, they had an exclusive on the cover of People in Spanish, and nobody even knew. They were engaged and kept it secret for months, and then the wedding day was complicated. Their wedding had many flowers and details, but we have had others just as beautiful.
JA: What has been the most exotic, chaotic, decadent, spectacular place that you have had to transform?
GA: A friend got married on a hectare of land in the middle of nowhere, with a “looooong” table, we had to bring everything: water, bathrooms, the kitchen, tent everything. We learned a lot, especially to make lists upon lists and check them and check them again because you can’t forget anything, and it was a very very beautiful wedding, and in the place that she wanted.
JA: How does the organization of events and weddings in San Miguel help citizens indirectly?
GA: More than six thousand families live from this industry in San Miguel, plus hotels, restaurants, taxis, and butchers. I think that during COVID we realized how we are all interrelated and how we all must cooperate to do things well, and that people want to keep coming to San Miguel.
JA: How can residents contribute so that wedding visitors have a more pleasant stay, not only in hotels, restaurants, shops, but in the city in general?
GA: I think we do it. Well, sometimes taxi drivers are not so friendly, but Sanmiguelenses are kind of heart, we like people to have fun, we like to help, we smile a lot, this gives an added value to our city that not many others have. The bride and groom love to be applauded, to be congratulated, to have people smile, it is one of my greatest prides of being from San Miguel, that we are kind.
JA: Any recommendations for readers to be able to do many things, almost at the same time?
GA: I think everything can be done; it’s just having the desire.
JA: Share with us some numbers related to weddings that we do not know or knew.
GA: 900 weddings a year of all kinds: Catholic, same-sex, spiritual, civil, and so on. More than 6,000 families and 10,000 jobs with an approximate value of 1,555,875,000 pesos per year
GA: Feliz, tranquila, cuidada, divertida.
