Resisting State Violence

By Cliff DuRand

Philosopher Joy James will revisit her earlier book Resisting State Violence and examine the January 6, 2021 incursion into the US Capitol and a destabilized democracy amid rising (proto) fascism.

A self-described “rebel offspring of a southern military family,” James critiques authoritarianism, capitalism, white supremacy, and misogyny.

A prolific and creative philosopher, Joy James is Professor of the Humanities at Williams College. She has worked with activist organizations for decades. She is the author of “The Womb of Western Theory” and a forthcoming book on “The Captive Maternal.” James is editor of Imprisoned Intellectuals; The New Abolitionists; Warfare in the American Homeland; The Angela Y. Davis Reader; and co-editor of The Black Feminist Reader. Her books include: Resisting State Violence; Transcending the Talented Tenth; Shadowboxing: Representations of Black Feminist Politics; Seeking the ‘Beloved Community’.

Blacks have been the target of violence both from the state and civil society. The KKK, lynchings and race riots were common throughout the South as well as the North well into the 20th century. In response the Black community banded together to take care of itself collectively. This is what Joy James calls The Captive Maternal. She will explain this as well as other concepts like The Black Matrix and Womb Theory.

February is Black History Month. The Center for Global Justice will present webinars with outstanding Black activists. In addition to Joy James, we will hear from philosopher Lewis Gordon, who will talk about his new book Black Consciousness: Political Realities. We will also talk with Cherry Steinwender, who is Director of the Center for the Healing of Racism in Houston. Through these as well as the numerous webinars we’ve already had on race and racism, we are contributing to the national reckoning with racism.

This webinar is part of a weekly series featuring thought provoking speakers on a variety of social issues. The Center for Global Justice Is devoted to research and learning for a better world. We offer these webinars every Monday at 1pm. Tune in at www.globaljusticecenter.org. You can also view past programs there.
