New hotels and tourism developments in San Miguel de Allende

By Carola Rico

In the August 11 edition of Atencion San Miguel, we announced three new hotels that will be opening soon: Pueblo Bonito, Hyatt and CleviĆ”. These are international brands that plan to open in San Miguel by the end of 2022 and the beginning of 2023.

However, in an exclusive interview, the mayor of San Miguel de Allende, Mauricio Trejo Pureco, indicated that the Hyatt hotel will not be opening due to excess dimensions and must enter a new regularization process. That hotel, the Numu Boutique Hotel, part of the Unbound Collection by Hyatt, was to be located on Nemesio Diez Street. It was scheduled for opening at end of this year. The proposed building includes 44 rooms, two restaurants, a bar or lounge, a spa, and an outdoor pool.

Regarding the Wyndham Hotel, located near the Picachos, Trejo explained that it belongs to the Pilarica development. This development takes water from a private well, not a well that carries water for residents. They also intend to have commercial premises.  The mayor said that the project had already been authorized by the previous administration. The construction has been well analyzed by this mayor’s office. Ā«We saw it with good eyes and we were facilitators so that all the papers were in order,Ā» commented the mayor.

Regarding a development near the Live Aqua hotel, Casas Armani, Trejo said that there is no permit. As far as the development of Garambullos, he reported that it has been closed by a judge, because of a lawsuit filed and won by the El Charco del Ingenio civil association.

The Plaza Epic in front of the Ventanas subdivision, has been authorized by Trejoā€™s administration to continue with its construction. The mayor explained that it is a commercial plaza that will be an economic boost for the San Miguel de Allende-Dolores Hidalgo corridor. This is even more so with the announcement that the Conspiracy Boulevard work will be carried out by the State Government.

The mayor announced that the construction of a Waldorf Astoria hotel, of New York origin and famous for its art exhibitions, is being contemplated. He pointed out that it is an advanced project and will be located in what was the Cardo Parking Lot. The mayor noted that it is one of the best hotels in the world, and will boost San Miguel de Allendeā€™s image for cultural tourism. According to the mayor, some modifications are being made to the design to comply with the cityā€™s building regulations, such as the height and style of the building. Construction on this new development is expected to begin in January 2023.

A new development proposed, and to be considered by the current administration, is a golf course. It would be located between the communities of Sosnabar and Alcocer. It will respect the type of soil and the densities of the area. It would also have a plant for the treatment and reuse of water from retention ponds.

Finally, regarding the Walmart multinational corporation, which has been widely speculated to build in San Miguel de Allende, the mayor announced that there is no permit for this. He also said that there has been no contact with anyone belonging to the chain. What there is, he said, is permission for a market, with whose investors he has spoken personally. He explained that San Miguel de Allende already has the Bodega AurrerĆ”, Soriana, La Comer, and City Market stores. The mayor stated that he did not agree with removing the small producers from San Miguel and replacing them with more large self-service chains.  He said that has been his policy, to take care of small producers, since his previous administration.
